Polar Bird Thursday, 15th November 2001

Ship's clocks turned back one hour due to our western heading, giving us an extra hour's kip. The air on deck was noticeably cooler this morning, but still the relative calm conditions persisted much to the relief of the "zeekrank" passengers. Chunky issued us all our remote field gear in No. 2 hold; goretex down jackets, down shoes and other odds and sods. After lunch I slipped up to the bridge to check our rate of progress. Our cruising speed was just a tick over 6 knots due to a strong adverse current. The Filipino first mate said we would pick up speed after the Antarctic convergence, but still our arrival time off Davis would be a few days later than anticipated. Air temperature was 6 degrees, down from 12 the previous day, sea temp 7 degs (down from 10). We are quickly leaving the temperate zone. The afternoon went uneventfully, reading, dinnering and watching "The Day of the Jackal" on the video. We crept past 50° S. Time is slowing .....

Position at 23:40 local time (UT +10hr) S 50°16'49" E 136°32'19"
1165km SW of Hobart, still another 3800 to Davis !
