Polar Bird, Friday, 16th November 2001

The wind picked up to a steady 20 knots from the West this morning, coming in from starboard causing a higher swell rocking the ship a bit more vigorously than usual. We had a lecture, slide show and video session given by the Mawson FTO on hazards. This gut wrenching pictorama culminated with video footage of a clown tapping away at the roof of a shallow ice cave, only to have 30 tons of blue ice thundering down around them. Hamburgers for lunch. The ocean was noticeably more excited today with the bow of the ship occasionally going beneath the swell. A front crossed in the early afternoon with some high seas looking particularly grizzly. Temperature today cooling sligtly, sea at 6°, air 4-5°. The convergence must be near !
