Polar Bird, Sunday, 18th November 2001
A rest day today from the arduous rigours of normal daily routine. The sea was noticeably more grizzly today with a consistent 40 knot wind from the SW pushing 3-4m grey waves over the stern. Air temperature 3 degrees. No place to go boon netting, though the thought had crossed my mind in an immersion suit. The ship was really rolling today, and making painfully slow progress (5 knots) against the powerful Southern Ocean current. Pizza for lunch, yum yum.. In the afternoon I ran a brief GPS course for the Beaverians followed by some enjoyable G&T and pinots in the FTO's cabin on C deck. The evening was spent watching zany British comedy videos until a call came through from the bridge that the first berg had been sighted. I couldn't see it though and after several minutes of scanning decided to turn in.
