Polar Bird, Monday, 19th November 2001
A special day for us, being Anya's Birthday. The weather was perfect, sunny and calm. We could have been crossing the Tasman Sea at a glimpse. The reality was though, the air and sea temperatures were hovering around 2 degrees ! At last we were picking up some speed, up to a mighty 9.5 knots !! To kill time, Joe, Adam and co were playing golf from B deck down to the bar which was causing a bit of mirth. At 4.30 We had a meteorology training session down in the bar which quickly transcended into a birthday party for Anya. Cracking of champagne, Pinot Noir's and the presentation of an autographed, laminated satellite image of the Southern Mawson Escarpment. Anya and I discovered that we both knew a remarkable Polish lass, Danushka from older times. I met her on the 3 day barge trip from Puerto Williams to Punta Arenas earlier in the year, and Danushka had earlier assisted Anya with the BAS work. A small world indeed ! The birthday cake was a spectacular half ton chocolate extravaganza of Janine's. The party extended well until the small hours. Good stuff. No bergs but.
