Polar Bird, Tuesday, 20th November 2001
Guess what ? More Southern Ocean ! One realises travelling by sea how large the world really is (or how slow sea travel really can be). The sunny calm conditions of yesterday didn't last until the mid morning. We lost another hour last night. A magnificent brown-headed albatross could be seen gliding imperiously around the ship, and one of the "bird-watch" spotted a spouting whale earlier on. Hopefully we would see few more creatures of the sea before we hit the ice. The next few hours were spent invigilating Tom's Land Economics exam in the Voyage Leader's Office. How irrelevant TVM calculations are being 2700km from the nearest bank ! We watched the old schoolboy classic "Raiders of The Lost Ark" in the lounge followed by roast beef and quiz night. I was feeling decidedly queezy (the 10 day old pate d'foie a very likely culprit) and a few unsavoury recollections of Chunky's made me race with great haste to the porcelain. There was a slight snag with this; being unfamiliar with the geography of A deck I mistook the sleeping Doctor's quarters for the WC. I'm not sure who was more surprised! To cap things off, Rob Ferguson threw me a VB antacid which exploded on impact. Nice to know who your friends are...
