Polar Bird, Monday, 26th November 2001

Today heralded our 14th day at sea. The ship was moving very slowly through the ice and by lunch-time had stopped. All of us went through extensive sessions of field training on the icy deck, doing Z-haul rescues and glacier walking techniques. The training was curtailed by a rather fiendish flu which had stricken Andy Chunky, our FTO, and the iminent resurrection of two Squirrels, one of which flew off and did an "ice recce". By dinner time we were under "full" steam making good progress through an unexpectedly large lead of open water. The remainder of the scientific groups completed their presentations, well into the evening. By midnight, the ice again closed in as evidenced by the jolting and jarring of the massive hull. Russell, our Rumour officer suggested that the Ship's Captain wants to go to Mawson first !! Hmmm...
