Vestfold Hills, Monday, 3rd December 2001
We slept in a bit, the progress of the morning being difficult to judge with such strong light. We quickly packed and departed. Our speedy progress was interrupted by an air line blockage on my quad caused by ice. We moved quite quickly, up to 70 km/hr on good sections of ice after this, the snow being firmer than the previous day, getting back to the ship at 10 am, our expected arrival time. We refuelled and changed over with the second field training crew before walking the 4km Davis station to catch up with all our friends from the ship and get our mail. Anya, despite her nasty flu, succeeded in getting her seismic station installed. Martin, Rob and I met up with Jeremy Smith, the station leader to discuss our projects. This was a very fuitful meeting and we were very pleased with his very enthusiastic support for the Beaver lake and AMISOR projects. The afternoon was spent topping up our field supplies and getting excess personal effects off the ship to our dongas to await our return. Dinner was an absolutely delicious penne followed by a very sociable couple of hours at the Davis bar sampling the famous home brews and a surprise batch of Chinese malt beer. The local Black and Tan and the Chinese beer were surprisingly good, but the local lager was a bit "cidery" for my taste. Rob, Sophie, Martin and I knocked out a very lazy game of pool having a few laughs. A couple of hours were spent working through 50 or so emails on the yahoo, working through a few homies at the same time. Afterwards a good time was had by all, with Chunky, Charlton, Tom and the German crew rolling in very late from field training for a few sherberts. The ship's captain was very keen to get sailing ahead of some very nasty weather forecast the next day, so Ben our benevolent glaciologist zipped us back to the ship in the ute at about two for yet another round of socialising in the safety of the ship's bar.
