Polar Bird, Thursday, 6th December 2001
Today was Charlton's 29th birthday, our helicopter ops manager. The ship was still treading water in Prydz bay despite the calm conditions, the captain fearful of getting caught up in the accumulated ice towards Sansom Island. How frustrating ! Killer whales followed the ship for a while earlier on. We moved about 30km closer to Sansom by the afternoon into the broken pack ice. Dave Pullinger took one of the Squirrels out for a recce. Apparently a huge section of fast ice was nearby, inhibiting further access, but a small lead was spotted. We did get the word that flight operations would commence tomorrow pending good weather, whatever the ship's position. The sun broke out later. We had a party in Charlton's cabin, much champagne and wine. Chunky and I were busy printing off a Scrabble board, photographed by Rob should he be laid up in a blizzard somewhere, to present to the young boy. The evening was spent pleasantly chatting in the mess.
