Landing Bluff, Friday, 14th December 2001
The blizzard conditions continued today as expected with 30-35 knots from the NE driving wet sludgy snow over Druzhnaya IV. The temperatures were surprisingly mild, 2° and at one stage we had driving rain ! When the visibility cleared occasionally, a Weddell Seal could be seen lounging on the fast ice below the station. Clearly this creature must have swum under the 40 miles of ice to break through a tide-crack near us. Quite amazing really. The rest of the day was spent reading, gathering compacted snow to make water, refuelling and feasting on Charlton's superb pancakes and Anya's mulled wine. We watched some slides of previous trips later in the evening while the blizzard continued to howl outside. We heard that the Polar Bird was officialy "stuck" in pack ice in Prydz Bay. Looks like Voyage 6 is going to be quite late !
