Landing Bluff, Friday, 21st December 2001

The Austral summer solstice today, the sun reaching it's highest elevation at 14:05 local time at 43.5 degrees above the horizon. It was a nice day today, with minimal wind and some higher cirrus above. Two choppers arrived from Davis at about 11:30 and flew the remaining load of Lake Terra Savoje eqpt to their camp, along with a sizeable quantity of alcohol. The German corers and geos will be very happy tonight with all their gear and creature comforts. Sophie Constable "Little Soph" from the Leopard Seal team sent us a lovely hamper of goodies and a card from Davis which cheered us up, as did a few loaves of fresh bread ! The Inside Sport edition included, featuring Anna Kournikova would no doubt be disseminated around the station when the Russian's next arrive ! Finally, we had all the Beaver Lake GPS gear on the helipad ready for the next sortie as the weather was still holding good here, but with some high cloud developing at Beaver Lake. Alas the Amery Ice Shelf AMISOR camp was in near white-out conditions, seriously jeopardising their whole summer program. We waited with great expectation for the choppers to return, but the weather was looking slightly marginal at Beaver Lake and they made a decision to return to Davis with a few of the AMISOR group. We spontaneosuly grabbed a few home brews and took them up to the Middle Bluff and commiserate. We will get to Beaver Lake sometime hopefully !! The weather held good here for until late in the evening when the whiteout gloom started to envelop, blizzards expected to return tomorrow ! It seems doubtful now that anything will happen until after Christmas, now.
