Landing Bluff, Saturday, 22nd December 2001
As expected, the low off Cape Darnley resulted in a return of the blizzard, starting off at 20 knots in the morning and escalating to 52 knots with dense blankets of driving snow by the late evening, visibility down to 20 metres. Only three days to go to Christams, and we were wondering if we'd get to Beaver Lake by then ! Anya (with some inspiration from the rest of us) wrote up an alternative "12 days of Christmas" adapted for the Druzhnaya quartet. With deference to the secrecy act, this will not released till the big day and will be rendered over the HF net, comms willing. The sat phone isn't here, that's why there's been a delay in keeping the log up to date. We broached two bottles of red to celebrate the onset of release and a surprisingly good mull was made out of the 1996 vintage Yalumba Rose goon, which on first tasting would have been suitable only for the chips. The blizzard was really shaking the place badly at 2 am, must be a few 60 knotters in there.
